Accomplishing Goals with an Undefined Heart Centre in Human Design
Within the framework of Human Design, the notion of commitment, especially for those with an undefined ego / heart centre, prompts a lot of discussion. At the heart of this discussion is the perspective that those of us with undefined heart centres shouldn’t make commitments. Let’s delve into this topic and explore how you actually could effectively commit to your goals as someone with an open heart centre.

Never Heard of Human Design?
Human Design is a unique system that combines principles from astrology, the I Ching, Kabbalah, and the Chakras. It offers a personalised map of your energetic design, providing insights into your personality, strengths, and inner workings. This map, known as your BodyGraph, helps in understanding how you interact with the world and make decisions.
The Undefined Heart Centre
Having an undefined heart centre in your BodyGraph chart means that your willpower and sense of value are not consistently accessible internally. Instead, the undefined heart centre often mirrors and amplifies the energies around you — which means, if you’re not mindful of this, you’ll make commitments that are grounded in the quest to feel valuable to others, rather than what is truly aligned for you.
Inner Authority and Decision Making
Your most aligned commitments arise from noticing and trusting your Inner Authority, which is your inbuilt decision-making technology. There are 6 different types of Inner Authority in Human Design, to find out yours, refer to your BodyGraph chart.
Here's a brief description of each Inner Authority in Human Design along with the percentage of the population they represent:
Emotional Authority (58%): Decisions are best made over time, allowing emotional waves to pass for clarity.
Sacral Authority (29%): Relies on immediate gut responses for decision-making.
Splenic Authority (8%): Intuition and instincts guide decisions, often felt as subtle internal signals.
Self-Projected Authority (1.7%): Decisions are made through self-expression and understanding one's identity.
Ego Authority (1.3%): Decisions are driven by personal desires and willpower.
Environmental Authority (1.6%): Decisions are influenced by the surrounding environment, especially significant for Mental Projectors.
Each of these authorities provides a unique approach to decision-making, reflecting the individual's specific Human Design.
Reflectors do not have an inner authority in the traditional sense like other types. Instead, they rely on the lunar cycle to guide their decision-making process.
Approaching Commitments Gently
When committing to goals with an undefined heart centre, it’s best to approach them softly and mindfully so that you don’t say yes to things out of obligation or societal expectations.
As someone with an undefined heart centre, I can share firsthand that I often commit to various goals and creations — and I’ve been able to accomplish them. Some examples include:
A sustainable approach is key. For instance, while working on my book, I devoted 90-minutes to it, four days a week, for a month. This made the process feel easy and enjoyable, rather than a strenuous obligation.
My Grounding Mantra
On a day to day basis it’s easy to get caught up in the unconscious need to demonstrate our value to clients, family and friends — which drops us into people pleasing behaviour and making those misaligned commitments.
This is where having the following mantra can be so helpful in gently grounding you back into your own centre:
“My presence is enough. I don’t need to perform, prove myself, be productive or solve problems that are not mine to solve, in order to be valuable. I dare to lean-back with curiosity, instead of push forward — and notice what happens when I do that ”
Keys to Making Aligned Commitments
Examine Your Motivation: Before committing, ask yourself about the reasoning behind it. Are you trying to prove your value to yourself or others? If so, reconsider the commitment.
Follow Your Inner Authority: Understanding and following your inner authority is crucial. Trust it. Let it guide your decision-making, even if those choices don’t make logical sense at first.
Practice Self Compassion : Be gentle with yourself, especially during times when you can't follow through on a commitment. Recognise that it's part of the journey and an opportunity to learn about yourself.
Having an undefined heart centre in Human Design does not mean you can’t have big goals and commit to them. It's about understanding your unique energetic makeup and aligning your commitments accordingly. By being mindful of your motivations, following your inner authority, and practising self-compassion, you can commit to goals as see them through.
